Commonly Asked Questions

Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than three months. It can start after an injury or illness, but sometimes it appears without a clear cause. You may also hear the term nocioplastic pain — this simply refers to pain that doesn’t have an obvious injury or inflammation behind it, but is still very real.
This type of pain often involves changes in the way your nervous system processes signals. Think of it like a smoke alarm that’s become too sensitive — going off even when there’sno fire.
-
Pain started during or after a stressful life event
Pain that spreads or shifts locations over time
Symmetrical pain (on both sides of the body)
Pain that flares up unpredictably
Pain triggered by light touch, mild pressure, or cold temperatures
Pain that worsens with stress or poor sleep
If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. As many as 20% of Canadians live with chronic pain.

We still don’t know the whole picture, but we do know that there’s no single cause. Several factors that often play a role include:
Genetics and biology
Life stressors or trauma
Anxiety and depression
Fear of movement or avoidance of activity
Overdoing it on “good” days
The way we think and feel about pain

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes widespread pain throughout the body. In addition to pain, fatigue and difficulties with memory or concentration are among the most common symptoms. Many people with fibromyalgia also experience poor sleep, digestive issues, depression, and anxiety. In Canada, about 2% of the population is diagnosed with fibromyalgia — with women making up 80–90% of those cases.
Because symptoms can be very different from person to person, and from day to day, effective treatment needs to be personalized. With the right strategies, support, and guidance, many people are able to reduce their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Research shows that online physiotherapy is as effective, if not more effective, than in-person care for managing chronic pain.
